Mission Statement

ASCSupporting academic excellence at DSU, the Academic Success Center (ASC) provides unique learning opportunities for students and faculty. The ASC provides direct services to students through academic assistance, monitoring, and intervention designed to help students succeed in the university environment. The ASC also works collaboratively with faculty to enhance instructional effectiveness and advising abilities. The ASC provides DSU students with trained and dedicated professional and peer staff to help any and all students with skills related to academic success. The ASC offers academic assistance to the general student population as well as to specific groups of students (i.e., students in their first year of college, students eligible for  Title IV TRIO programs, students still deciding a major, students with disabilities, and students experiencing academic difficulty).

Core Values

  • Academic Excellence
The ASC sets high expectations of academic excellence so that students can carry that expectation back to their classrooms and out into the world.
  • Respect
Respect is an essential element in an effective learning environment.  From the ASC to the residence halls and classrooms, this core value facilitates the learning process.
  • Attitude
A positive attitude is important in order to succeed in life and obtain higher goals.  The ASC staff helps to promote good attitudes to assist in making positive changes in our students' behaviors and lives.
  • Responsibility
We believe responsibility is important for faculty, staff, and students alike.  Having this quality means all members of the DSU community are sufficiently self-disciplined to be prepared for each class, meeting their respective commitments and deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude.
  •  Perseverance
By building a community of learners, the ASC encourages perseverance of those engaged in the learning process.

The ASC offers the following services:

  • Math and Tutoring Centers
The ASC Math and Tutoring Centers are available free of charge to all DSU students who seek academic assistance in subjects such as math and science.
  • Writing Center
The ASC Writing Center offers assistance in writing and communications to all DSU students free of charge. All levels of writers from all discipline areas are encouraged to visit the Writing Center for assistance.
  • Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic enrichment program that is offered in conjunction with traditionally difficult courses. SI is designed to supplement – not replace – class lectures and recitations.
  • Disability Support Services
Disability Support Services is a program designed to ensure that students with documented disabilities have equal access to all of the educational offerings at Dickinson State University.
  • First-Year Experience
The First-Year Experience (FYE) starts with SOAR (Student Orientation, Advisement, and Registration) to get students oriented to campus and registered for the right classes related to their chosen major. Next, all freshmen are placed in fall semester learning communities that include a Freshman Seminar class and one other class; both are connected to their major and taught by a faculty member from that department.
  • Workshop Series
Every semester the ASC offers professional and academic development workshops to augment student, faculty, and staff success. For students, these workshops cover topics ranging from time management to healthy stress relief to note taking and test-taking strategies. For faculty and staff, workshops address such topic as techniques for classroom instruction and student evaluation, resources for advising, and support services are available on campus to students and instructors alike.
  • Educational Enhancement Services (a Federal TRIO SSS Program)
The role of Educational Enhancement Services (EES) is to provide opportunities for the intellectual, social, and cultural development of DSU students eligible for TRIO Student Support Services.
