Supplemental Instruction
While peer tutoring offers general assistance for various skill areas, Supplemental Instruction (SI) is made available through the Academic Success Center for students needing developmental assistance in a particular course. Students may be placed in English 100 or Math 101 based on their placement scores, or students may request to be enrolled in SI being sponsored by a department for a particular course. Students placed in SI for English or math will be assessed a program fee for that service. There is no charge for departmentally-sponsored SI courses.
SI discussion and review sessions are facilitated by trained peer SI Leaders who have already completed the course and received an A or B. SI is designed to supplement – not replace – class lectures and recitations. SI sessions are interactive and collaborative. Students who attend sessions learn to integrate how to learn with what to learn.
Historically, active SI participants, when compared to non-SI participants:
- Earn higher course grades
- Are more likely to complete a class
- Have higher re-enrollment rates
- Achieve higher graduation rates
