Academic Disciplinary Action

Academic Misconduct
Dickinson State University does not sanction or tolerate academic misconduct by students. Academic misconduct such as cheating on exams, plagiarism, etc. are defined in the Dickinson State University Student Guide under Article III. A. - Academic Misconduct.

When the instructor has substantial evidence that such an academic misconduct has occurred, the instructor can determine the degree of penalty within his/her jurisdiction with regard to the course in which the misconduct occurred. Such penalties may range from a verbal warning to failure of the course. Proven gross academic misconduct by students may result in disciplinary actions that go beyond academic sanctions within the course. These actions may be severe, such as expulsion from an academic program, and in extreme cases, expulsion from the University. A written report of the incident will be placed in the student’s permanent file in the Office of Academic Records and destroyed upon graduation.

If the student does not agree with the instructor’s allegation of academic misconduct and subsequent penalty, he/she may make an informal and formal appeal through the Academic Appeals Process as outlined in the Student Guide and the Academic Affairs Policies and Procedures.

Academic Probation/Suspension
Academic probation is considered to be a trial period for the student to see whether or not he/she can demonstrate sufficient academic success to warrant continued enrollment at Dickinson State University.  A student may be placed on academic probation or suspension for the upcoming academic term if he/she does not meet the minimum grade point average listed below.

If a student who has been placed on academic probation fails to meet the minimum CUM GPA and attempted credits (from the academic requirements listed below), but does earn a minimum semester GPA of 2.00 (or higher) in the next semester, the student will be allowed to continue their enrollment on a continued probation status.  Should the student fail to meet the minimum CUM GPA and the attempted credits (from the academic requirement listed below) for the term following their continued probation status, the student will be suspended from the institution for a minimum of one regular (fall or spring) academic semester.

Students who have been suspended after the spring term will not be allowed to register for the summer session, which also does not count as an academic term for suspension purposes.  After the student’s suspension is over, the student may be permitted to continue his/her enrollment at Dickinson State University.  Students who wish to appeal their academic probation or academic suspension should contact the Office of Admission and Academic Records, May Hall – Room 111.
