Graduation
Day
Plan to arrive at Scott Gymnasium at least 60 minutes
before the official starting time of the ceremony to
allow for the assembly process.
Candidates will be marching and standing a good part
of the time; thus, low-heeled, comfortable dress shoes
are recommended. Since there are no secure areas to leave
personal belongings, it is recommended that jackets,
purses, and other personal items be left with family
members. |
The Assembly Process
Upon arrival, all degree candidates should follow this procedure:
- Candidates will report to Wienbergen Hall for spring commencement. At the assembly site, each candidate will receive a copy of the printed program and name card.
- Candidates go immediately to the signs marking their degrees and remain there.
-
All candidates are to be lined up and ready for the processional 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the ceremony.
- Honor ushers will lead the candidates from the assembly area approximately five minutes prior to the beginning of commencement and into the auditorium. The candidates will be directed to their assigned seating and will remain standing until directed to be seated.
General Information
Commencement Etiquette
University commencement ceremonies are special events for all involved. If
you choose to participate, graduates are expected to remain for the entire
ceremony. Leaving the ceremony early will not be allowed.
Electronic Devices
As a courtesy to those around you and to our graduating students, please turn
off pagers and cellular phones during the ceremony. We also ask that you
refrain from using extreme noisemakers.
Photographs
A professional photographer from Jolesch Photography will take a picture of
each candidate while receiving the diploma cover from the President. A few
weeks after the ceremony, a proof of these photos and an order form will
be mailed to each graduate. At that time, you may order pictures as desired.
This service is provided to ensure quality photographs and to avoid the confusion
of many individuals attempting to position themselves for picture taking.

Transcripts and Restricted Directory
It will take approximately six weeks to receive verification of your degree from your college, record this information on your permanent record, and prepare your diploma for mailing. If you are in need of a transcript reflecting your degree, you may request that a transcript be sent once the degree is recorded.
If you have requested “Restricted Directory,” please be aware that your name will not appear in the commencement program nor will it be released to your newspaper. Also, we will not be able to confirm your degree to employers or others without your specific request in writing.
If you have questions or concerns regarding this policy,
please call the Office of Academic Records at (701) 483-2331.
Degree verification
Often times after a student graduates from Dickinson State University, the
University is contacted by various businesses, governmental agencies and/or
admissions offices of graduates schools requesting that the University verify
the authenticity of the degree and the graduation date of the student.
For many years, this verification process was done directly
by the university. However, we have now signed a cooperating
agreement with the National Student Clearinghouse for them
to verify DSU’s degrees and graduation dates.
Therefore, if you need to have your degree verified, please
contact the National Student Clearinghouse (NCS) directly via
the following:
