“At Dickinson State University, I learned tolerance for ideas and values completely foreign to my experience. When I went there, I thought I knew all that mattered. When I left, I realized that I had only begun to appreciate what I did not know about fulfilling human potential.”
-- Everett C. Albers, October 10, 2003

The Everett C. Albers Humanities Institute

The activities of the Everett C. Albers Humanities Institute at Dickinson State University are intended to support the study of humanities and pay tribute to the festival’s namesake, Everett Albers, the founder and longtime executive director of the North Dakota Humanities Council.  The Council was founded and housed on the campus when Albers was on the Dickinson State University faculty.

An interdisciplinary, campus-wide committee planned and sponsored a festival in April 2005, inspired by the genius of their former colleague Albers.  The festival featured a variety of programming including a keynote address by humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson.  Additional humanities-themed talks include one by Ashley Weisz, recipient of the 2004-2005 Everett C. Albers Scholarship in the Humanities, and a Theodore Roosevelt Honors Scholar at Dickinson State University.  An exhibit tour of the L.A. Huffman Frontier Photographs, a collaborative project of Dickinson State University and the North Dakota Humanities Council which now adorns the ground floor of the university’s May Hall, were also featured, as well as book signings, receptions, a special showing of the film Northern Lights, and more.

Ongoing activities include the Everett C. Albers ’66 Scholarship in the Humanities, as well as Speakers Series, Teacher Institutes, and various humanities publications.
