of Language and Literature
You will explore the work of various authors, poets, and playwrights,
learn to write clearly, and appreciate the literary heritage
of our culture. Budding young journalists will have the opportunity
to experience firsthand how to conduct interviews, write news
articles, and design a newspaper. If you are interested in modern
languages, you can study Spanish or German.
Department
of Natural Sciences
Learn about the physical and natural world as you challenge your mind
through study in biology, chemistry, earth science, and geology. Students
in the department have been recognized across the region for their research
in the lab and in the field. You will learn from professors trained to
utilize the latest technology in conducting biology and chemistry experiments.
Interested students will have the opportunity to explore the Badlands
and other beautiful Great Plains terrain as they travel in search of dinosaur
fossils and geological phenomena.
A degree in one of the natural sciences will prepare you for a career
in medicine, pharmacy, wildlife management, or education.
Department of Fine and Performing Arts
The study of music, art, speech, and theatre is emphasized, and opportunities
exist for participation in each discipline. The department has audition
and non-audition groups, including a variety of choral and instrumental
ensembles. Art courses offer training in the areas of production, criticism,
history, exhibition, and education. Students can also explore the exciting
field of commercial art through classes in photography and graphic art
using top-of-the-line computers. The speech curriculum is designed to
strengthen oral communication skills, and theatre students actively learn
through participation in classes and productions offered throughout the
year.
Department of Music
The Dickinson State University music program develops musical excellence in individuals enabling them to pursue careers and experiences in music education and performance. The program’s curriculum offers all students, whether music majors or non-majors, the opportunity for further study of music for the attainment of a complete and robust undergraduate experience. Performance activities offered by the music program contribute to the aesthetic development of the students and the community.

Explore relationships and behavior through an understanding of a wide
range of cultures, civilizations, and social organizations. You can study
history, geography, political science, and sociology. This background
can prepare you for a broad range of careers in education, law, government,
and public service. Social work opportunities are also made possible through
a linkage program with the University of North Dakota.

You will have access to state-of-the-art technology and will be challenged
to apply logic and explore the power of numerical order. Mathematics and
computer science majors and minors prepare students for a magnitude of
challenging careers in computer programming, education, and business.
In today's technical world, computer use is an integral part of almost
every field. Therefore, students in all areas will benefit from a strong
computer background. The programs are also popular areas for future high
school teachers.
