Job Readiness Information top
The preliminary application process for a job position consists of
two documents: a cover letter and a resume.
Cover letters: A cover letter
allows you to tailor your application to each specific job. It also
allows you to highlight your most important and relevant accomplishments,
skills and experience that qualify you for the position. A cover letter
should reflect
your personality, your attention to detail, your communication skills,
your enthusiasm, and your intellect.
Resumes: A resume is your selling tool for
a job. It can contain many different sections. Each resume is tailor-made
for the applicant. Your education, skills and abilities, and work experience
will determine in what order they appear on your resume.
- Your personal information including your name, address, telephone
number, and email address
- Education, starting with the most recent first. Listing your degree
along with your major and minor.
- Skills and abilities that qualify you for the position you are applying
for.
- Work experience listing your job title, followed by name of company
and complete address.
- References consisting of supervisors, previous employers or faculty.
you have taken classes from.
Interviews: An interview is an opportunity
for you to learn as much about the company as they will
want to learn about you. This means you should do adequate research
on the company and go into the meeting prepared to talk about how your
skills and abilities can benefit the company. Preparing well lets you
approach an interview feeling confident and comfortable. When you have
done your homework, you will know that you have all the information
you need to make the right decision about an offer when it comes. Also,
remember to dress appropriately for the interview. First impressions
are very important.
Thank you letters: It is very appropriate
and expected to send a short thank you letter to the prospective employer
within 3 days after the interview.
Credential Files top
A service Career Services provides to students is the
development and maintenance of an individual credential file. A credential
file consists of a personal data sheet, letters of recommendations
and academic transcripts. This file is mailed to prospective employers
at
the request of the graduate or the hiring officials. Credential files
are very convenient and a cost-effective service that graduate students
and alumni may take advantage of. The fee for mailing a credential
file is $3.00 per copy.
To start your file, stop in the office in May Hall, Room
206 and pick up the necessary materials and forms. Some of the materials
are available to download here.
