Equine management options available
Dickinson
State University, in conjunction with the Global Equine
Academy, has added the equine management option for the
four-year bachelor of science agriculture studies in
addition to the two-year associate degree program.
"People will be able to take classes here on campus, or they'll be able
to take them at home on their computers. It really will be their choice," said
Dr. Gary A. White, chair of the Dickinson State University Department of Agriculture
and Technical Studies.
Gene and Sandy Miller, founders of the Global Equine
Academy, will handle the instruction of 11 on-line courses in the equine option.
The pair are nationally-recognized trainers with 50 combined years of experience.
Both served as professors at National American University before starting the
Global Equine Academy and feature a rare combination of training experience and
college degrees to help instruct students in the discipline.
"We've been very impressed with the quality
of the Dickinson State University students who took classes this past year," said
Sandy Miller. "We've very enthusiastic about the university's response and
the efforts of the students. One of the best things seems to be that students
are retaining the information better with the online style of learning."
Students electing the Equine Management option
will take 20 credit hours of on-line courses through the Global Equine Academy.
Course lectures are delivered via the internet and video. Tests are proctored
online, enabling students to get their grades immediately upon completion.
In addition, students will be required to take
nine credit hours of core courses for the DSU Agriculture Department in the agricultural
sales and services major and an additional 39 credit hours to complete their
general education requirements. Those general education requirements can be taken
on campus in Dickinson or via the internet through existing on-line courses within
the North Dakota University System, enabling the program to be truly tailored
toward the needs and the schedule of the individual taking it.
