Instructions for first-time interlibrary loan users.
Books, Videos, DVDs, CDs, etc.
[for requesting copies of articles, see the instructions following titled: “Journal/Periodical/Newspaper articles”]
Patrons are encouraged to search ODIN via the Library’s home page to locate books, videos, DVDs, CDs, etc. If you have found an item you want, but Stoxen Library does not own it, you may request an interlibrary loan of the item. ILL requests can be initiated within an ODIN search.
- Click “Sign In” at the very top of the page.
- Enter your DSU ID (no “W”) and password (your last name).
-
 |
Locate the item(s) you need and open the record by clicking the “view” icon to the left of the corresponding item. |
- With the item’s record open click
near the top. This brings up an electronic form with the item’s information already filled out.
- Look through the form to make sure everything is filled out, adding any information as needed, and click
. The more information that is included, the greater the success in retrieving the item.
- You have now submitted an interlibrary loan request for the item. All requests are processed promptly, but due to processing time, availability of the item, and shipping, the item may take three days to a week or more to arrive. You should always indicate the maximum amount of time you can wait or the request may not be processed.
- When the item has arrived, we will contact you by e-mail or by mail for pick up at Stoxen Library. You must have your DSU ID with you to check out the interlibrary loan.
Journal/Periodical/Newspaper Articles
- If you have found an article, but not the online full-text version of the article within the licensed database you are searching, make note of the article’s complete citation (journal or newspaper name, issue, date of publication, title of article, and article pages numbers). Most licensed databases contain a combination of full-text articles as well as citations only.
- If the full-text is not present in the licensed database you are searching, determine the availability of the periodical by title. Hint: Open a new browser window and go to Stoxen Library’s home page at http://www.dsu.nodak.edu/library.asp and click on:
Find a specific magazine or journal - Listing of Periodical Titles
- This is a list of every journal Stoxen Library has purchased access to, in any form (on-line, print, or microfilm), including dates of availability and location.
- Using this Listing of Periodical Titles, locate the journal/newspaper title that contains the article you are looking for. If Stoxen Library does not have access to the desired journal, skip to the following step and request a copy via interlibrary loan. Check the availability to see if the Library has full-text access to the journal in-house or offered through an electronic database.
- If so, click the link for a full-text version of the article or visit the print and microfilm journal collection (located on the Lower Level of the Library). The dates of the holdings are shown on this listing tool.
- If you determine that you cannot access the full-text article either online or in print or microform, you can request articles via Stoxen Library’s Interlibrary Loan Services.
- Please use the following steps outlined below under “Blank ILL Form” to complete your request.
- For articles, copies of the article will be sent instead of the actual item. This allows for quicker and more efficient processing than actual loans of journals.
Blank ILL Form
The blank ILL form can be used to fulfill loans for most items: books, videos, journal and newspaper articles, etc. If the blank interlibrary loan form used as described below does not work, please stop at Stoxen Library to add interlibrary loan privileges to your DSU library card.
Assuming you wish to request an item that is not available through any ODIN libraries, or an article that you cannot access through Stoxen Library’s holdings:
- Enter your DSU ID (no “W”) and password (your last name).
- This will take you to your library account on Stoxen Library’s ODIN system. Click
near the top left side of the page. This gives you a blank ILL form for you to use to enter your citation and other pertinent request information.
- Maximize the page and choose
or from the top, depending on the item being requested. (Note: if you are requesting a video, DVD, or CD, use the “Book” form.)
- Fill in the form with the information you have for the item and click
. Be certain to click OK when presented with the confirmation that your request information has been entered.
 |
It is important to include as much accurate information as possible. Insufficient or inaccurate citations may result in delays or inability to fulfill your request. |
- Please allow sufficient time for processing when indicating a date in the field: Until what date are you interested in the material? Requests that cannot be processed by your indicated need before date may be cancelled. All requests are processed promptly, but due to processing time, availability of the item, and shipping, the item may take two days to a week or more to arrive.
- You have now submitted an interlibrary loan request for the item.
- When the item has arrived, we will contact you by e-mail or by mail for pick up at Stoxen Library.
