Dave Moody
Head Coach
Dave
Moody enters his 14th season at Dickinson State with a 335-118 record
and is DSU’s all-time winningest volleyball coach. Moody’s
.739 winning percentage has helped establish DSU’s reputation as
one of the finest small college volleyball programs in the country.
Coach Moody has led his teams to seven regular season
conference championships, seven conference tournament championships
and seven region tournament
appearances during his tenure. The Blue Hawks have won three of the
last six regional tournaments, have participated in five of the last
six NAIA
National Championships and have not lost to a conference opponent since
1996 for a total of 90 consecutive match wins. In addition to a national
championship in 2000, the Blue Hawks have soared to an “Elite Eight” finish
in 1998, 2001 and 2002. Since 1998, the Blue Hawks have been consistently
ranked in the top five nationally.
During his tenure at DSU, Moody has been honored five
times as Conference Coach of the Year. During that span, Coach Moody
has also been recognized
as Regional Coach of the Year in 2002 and 1997. In 2000, Moody also
picked up the NAIA National Championships Coach of the Year. In that
same year,
Coach Moody was also chosen by the statewide media as the 2000-2001
North Dakota Female Collegiate Coach of the Year.
In the past 13 years, Moody has also watched his Blue
Hawk teams pick up many individual and team honors as well. In 2000-2001,
the
Blue
Hawk volleyball team was chosen as the North Dakota Female Collegiate
Team
of the Year by the statewide media. On two other occasions, the
program has been recognized in the honorable mention category.
In the past 13 years, the Hawks have been honored with
17 All-American selections, 34 All-Region awards and 50 All-Conference
picks. Additionally,
Blue Hawk players have picked up seven Conference Player of the
Year awards, five Regional Player of the Year awards, four All-Tournament
awards at the NAIA National Championships and one National Player
of the Year award.
Academically, Blue Hawk teams have been honored three
times with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team
Academic
Award.
This is an award that requires a volleyball team to carry a
minimum of a 3.3
GPA during the academic year. Individually, Blue Hawk players
have been recognized 11 times as Academic All-Americans over
the past
13 years.
Since joining the DAC-10 Conference in 2000, eight volleyball
players have been recognized with Academic All-Conference awards.
In addition to coaching volleyball, Moody stays involved
professionally at the conference, regional and national levels. This
year
Coach Moody will serve as the Vice-chair of the DAC-10 volleyball
coaches,
the
National Rater for Region III, the National Ratings Chair,
a member of the All-American
selection committee and the NAIA-Volleyball Coaches Association
(VCA) President.
Moody stays involved at the grassroots level by hosting
an annual volleyball coaching clinic at DSU, directing DSU volleyball
camps,
running numerous
site camps, speaking at the NDHSCA annual Coaches Clinic
and officiating high school volleyball.
At Dickinson State, Moody also teaches in the Departments
of HPE and Education. He currently holds the rank of
tenured Assistant
Professor. Professionally, Moody is a member of NDAHPERD
(North Dakota Association
of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance)
and AAHPERD (American
Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and
Dance). He is past president of NDAHPERD; and serves
as a reviewer
for the Physical
Education magazine “Strategies”. He also
serves as a board member and book reviewer for the National
Coaching Advisory Board.
In his spare time, Moody coaches Optimist Youth Basketball,
works at Lutheran Campus Ministries summer camps, coaches
Mustang Youth
Baseball
and serves on the board of Mustang Baseball.
Moody is a native of Beloit, WI and a 1976 graduate
of J.A. Craig High School in Janesville, WI. Moody
graduated from
the University
of WI-LaCrosse
with majors in Physical Education and Health and
a concentration in coaching in 1982. Moody then taught
and coached in
Beloit and Mayville,
Wisconsin
until 1988. In 1989, Moody attended Eastern Kentucky
University where he was a teaching graduate assistant
and an assistant

Kay Moody
Associate Head Coach Kay
(Johnson) Moody enters her 13th season as associate head coach for the
Blue Hawks. Coach Moody’s primary duties for the Blue Hawks are
on the defensive side of the net where the Blue Hawks are traditionally
very difficult to score upon.
Kay is a 1979 graduate of New Salem High School.
She graduated from Dickinson State magna cum laude in 1982 with a
major in physical education
and
a minor in history. While a “Blue Chick” at DSU, Kay competed
in volleyball and basketball. She played on conference tournament championship
volleyball teams in 1979 and 1982, and a conference basketball championship
in 1981.
In 1983, Johnson coached the DSU volleyball team for one year immediately
following graduation before moving onto Beulah where she taught and
coached track until 1987. From 1987-90, Kay was the head volleyball
coach at
conference rival University of Mary where she compiled an 87-58 record
enroute to capturing one conference (NDCAC) title in 1990 and two
sub-district titles in 1989 and 1990.
In 1991, Kay moved to Dickinson after marrying DSU Coach Dave Moody.
Kay Moody has the distinction of being the only person
involved (as a player and coach) in all 10 of DSU’s volleyball conference championships
in the sport’s 30 year history.
At Dickinson State, Moody is currently an adjunct
faculty member as well as currently teaching freshman seminar classes.
Kay is
also a
certified
fitness trainer, aerobics instructor and a certified lifeguard
instructor.
She and her husband, Dave, have three children; Nate,
Ali and Aanen.
